Hebrews 13Always remember that in the changing season of life and circumstances that we have an unchanging God; and in that we should find confidence and hope, for “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Even though human spiritual leadership may change, Jesus remains the same, so keep following Him, His Word, and His Holy Spirit’s leading. Warren Wiersbe writes on Hebrews 13, “Lest we get the idea that we can run the race successfully alone, the writer closes his letter by reminding us to follow our spiritual leaders. If we do, we will love the brothers and sisters (v. 1), help strangers (v. 2) and prisoners (v. 3), live above lust (v. 4) and covetousness (vv. 5–6), and not be led astray by false doctrines (v. 9). “Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Hebrews 13:1–2 (ESV) The Greek word translated angels can also mean “messengers.” Angels can be divine or human messengers. So whether the messenger God sends you is supernatural or not, remember that hospitality opens the door to those who are on a divine mission for your good. I am in my present role at the church for which I serve because God sent a word through a messenger whom I had never met which changed the trajectory of my ministry and therefore my journey. Eleven words were shared in a brief moment with no major introductions in a hospitable environment. “I have a word for you. It’s time to move on!” My mind was blown away in what I was enduring and questioning at the time. I could only see this as a message from God. I never saw this man again and there is no record of staying in the area. As I look back, I know this “angel” was a messenger from God. “Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.” Hebrews 13:3 (ESV) Throughout this chapter, we see shifts in verses, much like the ending of a pastor’s application message. “And finally, remember these 5 things— Care for them, Remember them, Obey them, Pray for them, and Greet them. “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:7–8 (ESV) We are all called to care for fellow believers or followers of Jesus who are being persecuted and incarcerated. Don’t focus so much on your own problems that you overlook those who are worse off than you. Most of our problems in the western world pale in comparison to the persecution our brothers and sisters are facing around the globe. So care for them and remember them. This passage may refer to leaders now dead, but their ministry and impact goes on. Remember what they taught you, how they lived, and what they lived for. Use their example to fuel the passion in you to carry the torch to the finish line. Community and Church leaders may come and go, but Jesus is the same; and we must fix our eyes on Him. “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.” Hebrews 13:17 (ESV) If they are faithful to care for our soul and teach us the Word, we have the responsibility to obey. A spiritual leader is not a dictator who demands and drives us from behind. He or she is a shepherd who goes before us and leads the way, according to God’s Word, God’s Will and the wisdom and leading of the Holy Spirit. “Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. 19 I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner.” 20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:18-21 (ESV) When we come to the throne of grace, ask God to make His shepherds faithful and fruitful. Pray that the Great Shepherd will use them to “make you complete in every good work.” The resurrection verifies the truth of Christianity and sets it apart from all other religions. The grave is empty; our Savior and King is alive and reigning. “Greet all your leaders and all the saints. Those who come from Italy send you greetings. 25 Grace be with all of you.” Hebrews 13:24 (ESV) We should know our leaders personally and be on good terms with them and let nothing come between us that could create problems in the fellowship. Do you believe that the grave is empty; that our Savior and King is alive and reigning? Is you faith reflected in you care for other, your thought of others first, your obey to the Lord and to leaders? Do you pray for you community leaders and your spiritual leaders? Do they know? Today, know that you can have confidence in Jesus, His Word, and His sacrifice for you and your future. In Him you have hope for all eternity. Also know as a follower of Jesus, you are expected to live in accordance to His Word, with hospitality toward all His people, with respect and obedience toward those He has placed in leadership. You are called to live in peace and exhibit much peace and faith in Jesus Christ despite the circumstances you will face this side of eternity.
