Day 148—The Way Forward—Hebrews 1 Jesus Is Greater

There are moments in life when we become fascinated with what is impressive rather than what is ultimate. Throughout history, people have been captivated by angels, miracles, signs, and supernatural experiences. While these things have their place in God's redemptive plan, Hebrews opens with a glorious reminder that our attention must never settle on God's servants when it belongs to God's Son. The central message of Hebrews 1 is wonderfully simple: Jesus Christ is greater.

The believers receiving this letter were living under pressure. Many had suffered persecution, and some were tempted to return to the familiar traditions of Judaism. Angels held an honored place in Jewish thought because they had been involved in the giving of the Law. Yet before the writer addresses any practical concern, he establishes the supremacy of Jesus Christ. If believers truly understand who Jesus is, they will never look for another Savior, another mediator, or another source of hope.

Hebrews begins with one of the grandest declarations in all of Scripture: God has spoken. Throughout history, He spoke through prophets, visions, dreams, and mighty acts. Every message revealed another piece of His redemptive plan. But now, God has spoken fully and finally through His Son (Hebrews 1:1–2). Jesus is not merely another prophet pointing the way. He is the Way. He is God's complete and perfect revelation to humanity.

This truth should fill every believer with confidence. We do not have to wonder whether God has something greater to reveal than Jesus Christ. Everything necessary for salvation, life, and godliness has been revealed in Him. Christ is the Father's final Word.

The writer then lifts our eyes even higher. Jesus is called "the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature" (Hebrews 1:3). Just as sunlight cannot be separated from the sun, the Son cannot be separated from the Father. Jesus perfectly reveals God's character, holiness, wisdom, mercy, justice, and love. When Philip asked Jesus, "Show us the Father," Jesus answered, "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:9, ESV).

What an astounding truth! If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. Watch Him welcome sinners, touch lepers, calm storms, forgive enemies, and lay down His life on the cross. Every word and every action displays the very heart of the Father.

Not only is Christ the perfect revelation of God, but He is also the Creator and Sustainer of all things. Hebrews reminds us that the universe exists through Him and continues because He upholds it by His powerful word. Every sunrise, every galaxy, every breath you take is sustained by His authority.

Think about that for a moment. The One who carries the stars in their courses also carries His children through every trial. Nothing in your life is outside His sovereign control. The circumstances that confuse you have not surprised Him. The burdens that exhaust you have not weakened Him. The Savior who sustains the universe is fully able to sustain your life.

Then comes the glorious heart of the gospel. After making purification for sins, Jesus "sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high" (Hebrews 1:3). Under the Old Covenant, priests never sat down because their work was never finished.

Sacrifices had to be offered continually because they could never permanently remove sin. But when Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice, the work of redemption was complete.

His cry from the cross, "It is finished" (John 19:30), declared that the debt had been fully paid. There is nothing left for you to add. You cannot improve upon the finished work of Christ through religious effort, moral achievement, or personal sacrifice. Salvation rests entirely upon His grace and His completed work.

Dr. Tony Evans wisely notes that Christ's sitting down demonstrates His finished work and present authority. The risen Lord now reigns at the Father's right hand, interceding for His people while ruling over history until every enemy is placed beneath His feet.

The remainder of Hebrews 1 establishes Christ's superiority over the angels. Though angels are magnificent servants of God, they remain created beings. They worship Christ. They obey His commands. They minister according to His will. They are sent to serve those who will inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14), but they themselves are never to receive worship.

The Apostle John learned this lesson firsthand. Overwhelmed by the heavenly visions, he fell before an angel in worship. Immediately the angel stopped him, saying, "You must not do that!... Worship God" (Revelation 22:8–9). Even the angels understand that all glory belongs to Jesus alone.

That truth speaks directly to our generation. While few people may literally worship angels, many give supreme devotion to created things. Careers, possessions, relationships, achievements, influence, entertainment, even ministry itself can quietly become substitutes for Christ. Whenever our hearts treasure the gifts more than the Giver, our worship has drifted.

Hebrews gently but firmly redirects our gaze. Do not fix your eyes on servants when you have the Son. Do not cling to shadows when you possess the substance. Do not settle for temporary things when you belong to the eternal King.

Jesus is greater than every religious system because He fulfills what they only anticipated. He is greater than every prophet because He is God's final revelation. He is greater than every priest because His sacrifice is complete. He is greater than every king because His kingdom will never end. He is greater than every angel because He is the eternal Son whom angels worship.

Whatever challenge stands before you today, remember who walks beside you. The One who created the universe also redeemed your soul. The One who defeated sin and death now reigns with all authority. The One who saved you has promised never to leave you nor forsake you.

Lift your eyes to Jesus. Worship Him alone. Trust Him completely. There is no greater Savior, no greater Shepherd, and no greater King.

Father, thank You for sending Your Son, who is greater than all creation and worthy of all worship. Help me keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, trust His finished work, and walk confidently in His power today. May my life bring honor and glory to His name alone. Amen.
