DAY 128—The Way Forward—Trust Jesus In All Things

There are seasons in life when doing what is right still leads to misunderstanding, criticism, or even false accusation. Those moments can be discouraging and confusing because we naturally expect truth to prevail quickly and justice to be immediate. Yet Acts 24 reminds us that even when lies seem to triumph temporarily, God is still in control. His purposes are not hindered by slander, opposition, or injustice.
Paul once again finds himself standing before earthly authorities, this time before Governor Felix in Caesarea. The Jewish religious leaders arrive with a lawyer named Tertullus to press charges against him. Luke records how Tertullus begins with exaggerated flattery toward Felix before launching into accusations against Paul (Acts 24:2–9). Harold Wilmington notes that Paul was falsely accused of stirring riots, opposing the Jewish religion, threatening Roman order, and profaning the temple. He was even labeled a leader of “the sect of the Nazarenes” (Acts 24:5).
This is how the enemy often works—through distortion, slander, and fear. Satan is called “the accuser of our brothers” (Revelation 12:10). When truth cannot be defeated honestly, it is often attacked dishonestly. Yet Paul does not panic. He does not lash out in anger or lose his composure. Instead, he calmly and confidently presents the truth.
Paul begins his defense respectfully: “Knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense” (Acts 24:10). There is confidence here—not confidence in circumstances, but confidence in God. Paul knew his conscience was clear.
He points out the facts. He had not stirred up riots. He had not caused disorder. He had gone to Jerusalem to worship and bring aid to his people. “They did not find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd” (Acts 24:12). And importantly, the very men who originally accused him were not even present to testify (Acts 24:18–19).
But then Paul does something remarkable. Instead of merely defending himself legally, he turns the conversation toward the Gospel. He says: “But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers” (Acts 24:14). Paul was unashamed of Jesus Christ.
Notice the phrase “the Way.” Christianity was not merely a new religion or philosophy—it was a way of life centered on Jesus Christ, who declared: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Paul boldly affirmed that his faith in Christ was not a rejection of the Old Testament Scriptures, but their fulfillment. He believed “everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets” (Acts 24:14).
At the center of Paul’s testimony stood one foundational truth—the resurrection. He says plainly: “It is with respect to the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial” (Acts 24:21). Christianity rises and falls on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without the resurrection, there is no Gospel, no forgiveness, and no hope. But because Jesus rose from the dead, everything changes. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3).
Paul also shares an important principle for every believer: “So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man” (Acts 24:16). What a statement. Paul was not perfect, but he lived transparently before God and others. Integrity mattered to him. He was careful not only about what he preached, but how he lived.
That is an important reminder for us today. In a world filled with compromise and confusion, believers are called to live with integrity and a clean conscience. “Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable” (1 Peter 2:12). When accusations come—and they often will—we should be able to stand with confidence because our lives reflect the truth we proclaim.
Later, Felix privately summons Paul along with his wife Drusilla to hear more about faith in Christ Jesus (Acts 24:24). Felix was curious about religion, but as Dr. Tony Evans points out, curiosity is not the same as repentance. When Paul begins speaking about “righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment” (Acts 24:25), Felix becomes afraid.
Why? Because the Gospel confronts the heart. People are often comfortable discussing spiritual topics in general terms, but when the conversation turns personal—when sin, repentance, and accountability before God are addressed—many become uncomfortable. Felix wanted information without transformation. He wanted to hear about faith without surrendering his life to Christ.
Paul, however, did not soften the message to make Felix comfortable. He spoke truth with boldness. He understood that real love does not avoid difficult truths. Real love points people to the only hope found in Jesus Christ. “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2).
Felix knew Paul was innocent, yet he kept him imprisoned because he feared upsetting the Jews and hoped perhaps to receive a bribe (Acts 24:26–27). Humanly speaking, it seemed unjust. Yet God was still working through the injustice. What appeared to be delay was actually divine direction. God was moving Paul toward Rome exactly as He had promised.
This is such an important reminder for us. We may not understand why God allows certain trials, accusations, or delays in our lives. We may not immediately see how He is working. But His will is never thwarted. He is sovereign over every detail. “The counsel of the LORD stands forever” (Psalm 33:11).
Are you trusting Jesus when circumstances feel unfair?
Are you standing firm in truth even when misunderstood?
Do you maintain integrity when your character is questioned?
Are you boldly testifying to the hope found in Christ alone?
Paul teaches us that faithfulness is not determined by circumstances but by obedience. He trusted Jesus in prison. He trusted Jesus when falsely accused. He trusted Jesus when forgotten by earthly authorities. And through it all, God’s plan continued unfolding perfectly.
Today, trust Jesus in all things. Trust Him when lies are spoken against you. Trust Him when justice seems delayed. Trust Him when the future feels uncertain. Continue walking in integrity, speaking truth boldly, and living with a clear conscience before God. Because the same Lord who guided Paul through opposition and imprisonment is guiding your life as well.
And remember—your testimony matters. In every challenge, every hardship, and every trial, you have the opportunity to point others to the hope, peace, and salvation found in Jesus Christ alone. “The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent” (Exodus 14:14).
Prayer
Father, thank You that You are sovereign over every circumstance and that Your truth stands firm even when lies and accusations arise. Help us to live with integrity and maintain a clear conscience before You and others. Give us courage to speak the truth of the Gospel boldly and lovingly, even when it is unpopular or costly. Strengthen us to trust You in seasons of injustice, delay, and opposition, knowing that Your plans cannot fail. Guard our hearts from fear and help us rest in Your peace and faithfulness. Use our lives and testimonies to point others to the hope found only in Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.
