About Shan Smith
Sometimes God shows up when—and where—you least expect Him. That truth has shaped my life and ministry for more than three decades, but it became especially clear in the spring of 2021. What felt like an ordinary season became a defining moment, as God confirmed His call for what was next.
For over 32 years, I have had the privilege of serving in ministry—walking with people through seasons of faith, growth, hardship, and surrender. For 33 years, I’ve shared that journey with my wife, Jennifer, my greatest earthly blessing and faithful ministry partner. Together, we’ve watched God write a story far bigger than our own, marked by His grace and perfect timing.
In 2021, God clearly affirmed His calling on my life to serve coaches and athletes at Indiana State University through Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Nations of Coaches. This calling is deeply personal. Jennifer and I are both ISU alumni, and our family has spent years cheering, watching, and growing up around Sycamore athletics. To now serve on the sidelines feels like coming home—on mission.
Our son, Schyler, now 25, is teaching in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Watching him step into his own calling to serve and lead the next generation continues to remind us that God’s work multiplies through faithful obedience.
Earlier in my journey, God led me away from a management career with Lowe’s and fully into vocational ministry. Since 1994, I have served as a youth pastor, lead pastor, and executive pastor. Each season shaped my heart for shepherding people, handling God’s Word faithfully, and building ministries rooted in relationships and discipleship. Looking back, I can see how every step prepared me to serve coaches and athletes where faith meets pressure and identity meets performance.
What God continues to teach me is this: real ministry rarely happens on a stage. It happens on the sidelines—before practice, after games, and in quiet conversations where trust is built and hearts open. My posture remains simple: to be available, to be present, to love well, and to serve faithfully.
That same heartbeat has shaped my writing. I am currently completing a Character Coaching book titled The Soul of a Team, designed to equip coaches, athletes, and character coaches with biblical truth, leadership principles, and practical tools for whole-person development—mind, body, and soul.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 28:19–20 continue to guide everything I do: “Go and make disciples.” Few things are more fulfilling than seeing students hunger for God’s Word and watching that truth take root in their lives.
Today, I serve as:
Through chapels, team huddles, coaches huddles, leadership training, and this ministry platform, my prayer is simple: that coaches and athletes would grow in integrity, service, teamwork, and excellence—while discovering their true identity and purpose in Christ.
Jennifer and I are deeply grateful for God’s call to this mission. Thank you for walking with us—through prayer, encouragement, and support—as we continue serving on the sidelines for the glory of God. —Shan Smith
